the Chesapeake Bay Wayfarer Cruise 2008
Friday 30 May
: Tangier to Smith Island - 4
photos by Jeremy and Gary Hirsch plus Uncle Al

Here we are ...
...

... all of us, safely ensconced at the Smith Island Marina. No sign of our friend, Pauli, one of the owners as yet but ...
...

... Hans and Al have their little bit of luggage all set on the dock, ready to be moved into Pauli's B&B.
Alas, the Bayview Inn (red roof) was still undergoing renovations, so that we walked a couple of hundred yards further, and ...
...

... opted for Plan B.
...

Our food critic, Hans, was not too impressed with the food or the service, but ...
...

... it is nonetheless a ...
...

... fun ...
...
... place to go for most of us.
...

Hans looks unimpressed, having studied the ...
...

... menu.
...

Still, it's a nice view!
...

After our lunch/supper, we ...
...

... had a little look around or ...
...

... just found a little shade in which to avoid the worst of the day's increasing heat, now that we were ashore.
...
Meanwhile, the barge which apparently makes periodic trips like this to Smith Island, was getting ready to ...
...
... supply some mainland junkyard.
...

Where others see just junk, Tony has seen a business opportunity: Tony's Floating Used Car Lot. "Have I got the car for you!!
Only driven to church by a Baptist granny on Smith Island. A bit of flood water damage, but nothing serious ..."
...

Ah, a potential customer! Jeremy seems to have found the automobile of ...
...

... his dreams.
...

Back at the Marina, we are welcomed by the lovely Pauli who likes ...
...
... Al's shirt.
...

Once again, her husband, Captain Steve, is away working on the mainland to supplement the marina income,
so that the above likeness is as close as we'll get to meeting Steve. Next year???
...

At long last, Tony's Floating Used Car Lot is moved out.
...

Not very far ...
...

... however. They leave it in a spot with which Hans and Al had become all too well acquainted just a couple of hours ago!
...

And look what lives in the basement!!
...

Ah! The B&B's doorman!!
...

One of Pauli's paintings is the last thing we see before Hans and I go and try out our room for a little late afternoon nap.
Imagine how you'd feel if you were dating this gentleman's daughter and brought her home late!!!
...

We woke up in time to join in a little run through through some of the Smith Island channels we've never seen so far.
...

... Waverly Evans will run us over to ...
...

... his studio in Tylerton.
...

Soon we're off on a lovely evening that is becoming downright refreshing after the day's heat.
...

Heading out towards the Big Thorofare, we get a slightly closer view of ...
...

... the Smith Island ...
...

... goats who don't seem to mind ...
...

... drinking this brackish (somewhat salty) water.
