Sailing
History: I race at Orford Sailing Club (5 minutes
from home) on our East Coast estuarial river which has 16 navigable
miles and a very strong tide. It is a very special river & I will
tell you more about it when I see you all. Upriver is another Wayfarer
stronghold, Aldeburgh Yacht Club, where I sail during Regatta week and
at their Open Meeting. Frances & I attend as many Open Meetings,
Area Championships and Nationals each season as we can. I did the
Worlds at Hayling Island S.C. 1992 as a crew when I was Commodore of
the UKWA, & the last one in 2001 at Northern Ireland, East Down
Yacht Club, helming Ten Grand. Frances & I did the Dutch
Nationals in 2002. When the season at Orford ends, we take Ten
Grand to a beautiful local lake (no tides & fresh water!) and
join as Winter members to do two ten-week race series either side of
Christmas where there are up to 80 competitors. When I'm not racing I
cruise with Johnny, my husband and with Summer our dog in our Drascombe
Coaster. There's room on it for family & friends too for picnic
cruises. We did extended Wayfarer cruising in Wansfell 3277 for
twenty years, most of it when the boys were growing up. UKWA member
since 1974. |
Sailing
History: I was born in London & my family had a holiday
chalet on the East Coast of England where we spent all our holidays. My
father always had sailing dinghys from a Heron to a Jolly boat and I
owned my first boat, an Eleven Plus, when I was 15. I then owned a
Mirror, then a Topper, followed by a Wanderer and now I too own a
Wayfarer which I keep on a mooring on the estuary where I now own our
holiday chalet. I became a Dinghy Instructor in 1996 so I spend a lot
of time instructing. Some of my pupils are disabled and I find this
work particularly rewarding. This is my fifth season crewing for Liz in
Ten Grand. We did the last Wayfarer Internationals in N. Ireland. Very
occasionally Liz crews for me in my Wayfarer so she doesn't forget what
hard work it is! I belong to Orford Sailing Club and I also run sailing
activities for fellow sailors on the estuarial river where my chalet
and moorings are. |
When
not sailing: I teach 4 days a week Only 2 more years
to retirement after 32 years of teaching. Can't wait! I walk our dog
every day & swim once a week to try to keep fit. We spend as much
time as we can with our five lovely grand-daughters -the two oldest are
learning to sail and three of them are learning to ride ponies when
they stay with us. I would rather have sent you a photo of them all
than of me!!! And of course every other minute of my time is taken up with being Chairman of the UKWA for the second time! You would have thought I had learnt my lesson last time, but no, I agreed to take the task on again. It is somewhat more challenging this time round, but I like to be involved with anything to do with Wayfarers. |
When
not sailing: I work as a Carer and I have just started a
new job. |
Family: Johnny, husband for 42
years; Philip, son and Melanie, daughter-in-law, 3 grand-daughters;
Christopher, son and Maria, daughter-in-law, 2 grand-daughters. Lots of
relations in San Francisco. We don't want to act our ages when we are
on holiday in Canada, so we are not going to divulge them!!! |
Family:
I
have a son in the army and a daughter who spends much of her time
working on Thames Sailing barges. |
