Sailing History: Started sailing ex-naval whalers in his home town of Portsmouth with the Scouts – ‘let go of that sheet and you’ll be flogged’ was the sort of useful tips he quickly learned. Began learning in earnest 30 years later (still living with his instructor). Raced a 420 very badly on various ponds in Hertfordshire until moving to Kent in 1990. Joined the Wilsonian SC on the River Medway in 1990 and bought the first (of three) new Plus S, slowly improving through trial and error. A new crew last year reversed the gradual decline in performance due to age (or was it the reward for being Commodore?) and looking forward to an even more successful season this year. Has always enjoyed the Wayfarer racing scene as well as the social side.

Sailing History: The Technician and Strategist in the boat who often makes up for the helm’s mistakes and whose advice is seldom overruled! Started racing 1968 in Fireflys, where he spent much time reversing the roles of sails and centreboard, moved on to the Jacksnipe in 1970 (still his favourite boat). Won UK Snipe junior champs 1971, then later with a Snipe won a few Snipe & Handicap Opens, plus got 2nd in senior Snipe Nationals in 1975, all after a spell in Hornets. Bought a Fireball in 1979 and had a successful year (S. Kent, Leigh Trophy, Fireball Open) at Wilsonian SC 1980. Dabbled with a 505. Moved abroad and won several club series in Holland in a 420, and later in a Laser II, in which he also won a Laser II European Travellers' Trophy Round in Holland.
Won the Tideway Nationals in 2002 and Snipe Nationals last year (2nd, first Brit). Currently helms a Laser 3000, winning most of his races.

When not sailing: Semi retired French and German teacher.  Part time bookdealer/clandestine collector of nautical books as well as heavily involved in running the Wilsonian SC. Enjoys Real Ale and talking (first to arrive at the club, last to rig and shower!) When not sailing: Appears to be retired with a sometime girlfriend somewhere up North. Volunteer worker for the RSPCA, plays computer games and seems to spend the rest of his time sailing or talking about it – devotes a lot of his time coaching new members. Enjoys fast cars.
Family: Divorced with two children – Adrian, 25, something in computers, and Joanna, 23, forever promising to finish University and get a job! – and a double grandfather (Hollie, 1 and Emily, 4).  Family:
