Worlds Experience:

Sailing History: My first sail was in 1963 on Fanshawe Lake in London, Ontario.  This was the start of several summer sailing camps in Flying Juniors.  My brother Jim and I raced in some Boy Scout regattas and by 1970 we were wondering what kind of boat to get into when our uncle in Ottawa started selling Lasers.  One sail in these boats and it was all decided.  We had the first Lasers on Fanshawe in 1972 and sailed in a number of large regattas throughout the 70's.
In the late 1970's, my Dad changed his boat from a National One-Design to a Wayfarer.  That was the start of many years of racing with him that culminated with my first experience at a World Championship in 1989.  Denmark was a windy place and four of the seven days had to be cancelled.  I continued to race the Wayfarer until the late 1990's and then focused more on sailing my Laser.  The exceptions were joining two Wayfarer cruising rallies in Denmark and Holland in 2002 and sailing in the 2004 Worlds with a friend.
Some other sailing experiences include racing keelboats (C&C 27, J24 and Shark) but mostly I race my Laser.  In 2009 I attended the Laser Master Worlds in Nova Scotia.  I've even done some cruising in the Caribbean and on Georgian Bay.

Sailing History: I've been sailing since I was very young, first in an Optimist, but after that in a Europe - similar to a Laser, but way better ;-)
I've sailed in the Youth European Championships twice and I raced in a lot of big events in Holland and Belgium.  My father has a very old Wayfarer (W5179) and in the previous years we started sailing together.  I never really liked the Wayfarer, but I liked the company of my father and the good atmosphere among the Wayfarer sailors.

Two years ago Monica Schaefer (right) was looking for crew for a race in Holland, so we became a team and I loved the boat.  We sailed together during Sneekweek (4th), the Dutch Championship (2nd) and the British Championships (16th).  Since then I have been asking my father for a newer boat and I got rewarded: at the end of May we picked up a new Hartley.
When not sailing:
Life is just too busy to do everything I want to do.  I work for the federal government (Department of National Defence) and oversee the environment program for the Army in Ontario.  I play other sports such as ice hockey in the winter, badminton and whatever else I can find time to do.  Between house, family and a bit of travel, that's about it!

When not sailing:
Currently I'm studying medicine with a minor in medical anthropology.  I have to wait for my clinical internship which starts in February 2014 so right now I am working with physically disabled people.  Previously I studied biomedical sciences.
I am
young ;-)) and enthusiastic.  I like sports and good company to drink and eat together when the races are over.  My English is quite good, so language shouldn't be a problem.
Family:
Wife - Margaret Boersma (See the Dutch background!); son Patrick (17) Originally I thought I would sail with Patrick but he has a job this summer teaching sailing to help pay for going to university in the fall.
