Wayfarer Comfort Cushions
a solution from Ralph Roberts

Now that I'm getting older and have a little less padding on my bum,  one of my greatest needs is a system for padding my derriere.

Since this development I've been mostly carrying a life jacket with me every time I tack.  Very unsatisfactory, as you can imagine.  I also experimented with "pads in the pants" (TM).  More development work needed on keeping the padding centered.  I've also used a pad fastened to the gunwale as used by the Finns.  This wasn't too practical as the pad couldn't extend past the gunwale, leaving unpadded the exact sharp edge where your hiking hamstring gets crushed.

So my question is what is the best way to get padded and stay padded in a Wayfarer?!

Hi David,

I had the same problem with the long distance cruising that I did, and found the best answer was to strap a couple of garden kneelers (below) to the side deck – as in the attached photo, (and later refined so that they were covered in red waterproof cloth). (I also added further kneel mats on each side later – strapped to the boat with shockcord ties, so that I (and the crew – hence the reason there are 2 on each side), had these to sit on for greater comfort, even when not sitting on the side deck.

Best wishes,

Ralph
