Subject: lightboard ideas

Hi Richard,

Attached is a photo of my set-up. This photo should be sufficient to get the idea.  If you want more details I'll get a better photo and send specs.

Note as you'll see it is a combined boom/mast crutch that sits in the rudder gudgeon/pintle with attached light 'board'. Crutch itself is 3/4 plywood. Lights are attached to a length of approx. 1" square aluminum tube. License plate is still on trailer, but easy enough to attach to aluminum.

Regards, gents

Thanks Tom.  I like your idea the best.  I am intrigued though by other things in the picture. What Mark is your boat?  I ask because of the sealed sides/gunnels.

Hi Richard,

Ah yes, my modified Wayfarer.  It's a 1996 Mark III.  The guy I bought it from got it new from Abbott, and sailed one season.  He had a capsize single-handing, and had the infamous Mark III problem of repeat capsizes due to the way the buoyancy under the floor alters how the boat shifts when filled with water.  So he sealed in the sides as a way to alter the flotation and increase safety.  I got a great deal on the boat, and it was very conveniently local and as it was very early in my sailing & Wayfaring days, I just went ahead and bought it.  So that is a custom job, with some pluses and minuses .. It does seem the solve the problem of 'recapsizing' at least in my somewhat, thankfully limited, experience.

Regarding the light board, let me know if you want some better pics and measurements.  I'll be able to do that this weekend.

I was actually looking to do something similar to put more buoyancy under the rail and keep it from scooping up so much water.

If you can send me some more pics etc. I would appreciate it.

Hi Richard,

Here are photos and a minimalist schematic. Let me know if there are any points I can clarify....you'll note the doubled-up plywood on the back where the pintle and gudgeon attach.  Also, I can't recall where I got the correct size transom pintle and gudgeon fittings, but RWO might be a place to start.
