Race
#4: The U.S.W.A. Trophy (Wednesday 29 July, 20ºC,
increased
clouds): During the lunch break, the winds increased to 12-14 knots,
blowing
fairly steadily from the south. This was perfect Ian Porter weather and
he made no mistake as he led all the way in front of Mike Mac. Martin
Collen
and Mogens Just duelled all the way before the former took 3rd. The
fine
hiking breeze was just what Søren needed and he rounded 5th off
the first beat and moved as high as 4th before settling for a 6th when
Anders got by on the final beat. Despite a distinct preference for the
light stuff, Joel continued his excellent series with a 7th-place
finish.
Tough sledding for Poul in this one as he placed 24th. The new
conditions
presented a fresh challenge for the boat borrowers, especially Uncle Al
who was using borrowed sails as well. The latter got off to yet another
fine start only to get trampled by a horde of faster boats. After
ending
the first beat in 26th he fell to 32nd by the finish - his worst race
finish
in 9 Wayfarer Worlds! George and Geoff at least had the consolation of
moving better as the race went on. George rounded the first mark 52nd
and
got back to 45th while Geoff knocked off 8 boats after rounding 54th!
Nick,
meanwhile, remained a steady 48th but did enjoy the increased breeze!
