Race
#5: The Ian Proctor Wayfarer World Cup (Friday 31 July,
15ºC,
sunny, turning cloudy): After our lay-day, we started race 5 promptly
at
1040 in a nice hiking breeze of about 10-12 knots blowing fairly
steadily
out of the south. For us, this was a virtual replica of race 4: good
start,
boats going by on all sides before we levelled out in the mid-20’s
until
the day’s only major shift, a 10º veer on the final beat found us
favouring the left side for the first time since race 1. Meanwhile, one
of the seemingly endless line of talented UK sailors, Neil Fletcher,
sailed
the ’95 World championship Wayfarer beautifully, outduelling even the
superbly
tuned Porter/Gibb team until the final beat where Ian finally edged out
the upstarts from Waldringfield.
Despite sailing to a fine 3rd, Mike Mac’s title hopes were all but mathematically ended when Ian won again. The same was almost as true for Anders who continued his superb series as he rounded 3rd, lost Mike Mac on the first reach, but took a clear 4th from another Waldringfield talent, Roger Challis (5th). Yet another UK crew making an appearance among the leaders was the handsome young team of Dan Wealthy and Rob Broad (6th). Rumour has it that Dan and Rob were giving Mike Mac some tips (in view of the fact that they have reportedly picked up women in 22 countries in their young lives!) Søren continued to demonstrate his enthusiasm for a bit more wind with a fine 7th although he and crew, Jesper Friis (no relation to Anders!) were a bit disappointed that they couldn’t hold the 4th place they had off the first beat. Mogens Just rounded 7th off beat #1 but dropped to 11th by the finish. Joel had his first mediocre race, rounding 11th and falling to 16th as the race wore on. Meanwhile Poul Ammentorp’s second consecutive 24th put a severe crimp in his hopes of a series top 10 finish. George Blanchard and Nick Seraphinoff had an exciting finish where George completed a 9-boat comeback on the final beat to grab 40th just ahead of Nick. Meanwhile Geoff Edwards and George Waller had a forgettable 52nd.
